UK Driving License : Getting your Provisional Driver's license

In order for you drive without any restrictions you need to have a UK license and before you get that you need a learner's permit. Which fortunately is pretty easy to get. The requirements for a provisional license as mentioned on gov.uk is
  • be at least 15 years and 9 months old
  • be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away
The required documents are
  • BRP / Passport original
  • Passport size recent photo
  • National Insurance Number (read here how to get it) not an absolute requirement
  • Addresses of last 3 year
  • A valid debit/credit card for fees payment
Once you have all the required documents head over to this site. Here you need to register yourself. Provide all your details, address of past 3yrs you can enter non GB address as well. You will be asked if you have a National Insurance Number if you have write otherwise skip it. Once done you will asked regarding your eye sight whether you wear corrective lenses. Finally it will ask you to pay £34. Enter your card details and you will receive confirmation that your application is submitted. Make note of the Government ID number it provides you. In a week you will receive a form in mail. Fill out the form you need to attach your recent size photograph in the area given in the form. There are two options to verify yourself either ask someone with a valid driver license to sign the back of your photo or the second option which I prefer is send in your BRP along with the form to verify your identity. Your photo must match the description in the form and must be recent. If you don't have one, head to your near superstore Asda, Sainsbury, Tesco and get your pictures taken and printed on spot with self service photo booths located within these stores. Just give them instructions that you need it for for your driver's license and then follow the instructions on the screen.
Once you have completed the form, put in the given pre addressed envelope and take it your nearest post office. Do not drop it in the post box. Head over to the counter and tell them you need to send a tracked post. It wil cost you a few pounds but it's better so you trace if it gets lost in the transit. It will probably take a week and voila you will receive your learner's provisional license in mail followed by your BRP in a couple of days.
