How to get your UK National Insurance Number

National Insurance (NI) is a tax system in the United Kingdom paid by workers and employers for funding state benefits. According to GOV.UK
You pay National Insurance if you’re 16 or over and either:
  • an employee earning above £162 a week
  • self-employed and making a profit of £6,205 or more a year
If you are an employee earning
  • 62 to £892 a week (£702 to £3,863 a month) 12%
  • Over £892 a week (£3,863 a month) 2%
Fortunately since MTI doctors aren't employed as employees (they are employed by Trust under an honorary agreement) they don't have to pay taxes, insurance or pension. Since they don't pay taxes so they don't get any Public funds. So why should we bother? You need an insurance number for issuance of government documents. You need it for registering for Locum jobs because the pay you are going to get will be taxed.
So how to get your National Insurance Number?
You need to call on this Number 0800 141 2075 to start a new application for your NINo. They will take your details, address. You can either request to apply by post or by personal visit. Applying by post can take upto 6 weeks. Some places you may not get an option to apply by post. They will give you an application number keep that safe for future tracking of your application. Within a week you will receive a letter requiring to come for an interview at Jobcenter plus (department responsible for issuing NINo) with certain documents for verification or if you had applied by post you will receive an application form that you need to fill out and attach copies of certain documents which are same as the ones required for the interview. These documents include
  • Passport 1st 2 pages + signed page
  • UK visa entry on the Passport
  • BRP
  • Any other specific document required
If you are going for an interview you need to take the original with you otherwise if applying by post you need to make copies of these and send it with application form. In the interview you will be told when you will receive the number. If applied by post it will take around 6 weeks. You can call and ask about the progress of your application. Once your application is completed you will receive a letter stating your National Insurance Number
