Working in NHS as an MTI

Once you have completed your GMC registration and have settled in its time to start your training full time. You will be assigned an Educational supervisor who will guide you through and help you maximize your 2yrs here. In your 1st

meeting explain in detail your background what you have already achieved back home, what are your plans here, what are your goals. Ask your queries to prepare yourself on what's to come. Initially you will be asked shadow a consultant or directly SHO. While shadowing a consultant you need to be punctual ask them when and where they start their day. Reach before they reach remember it's all about how much you are interested and want to learn.
Follow around, it's a great opportunity to learn how to interact with patients, counsel family members, how are rounds conducted, what protocols to follow, what services are available and who and how to reach. So start making mental or paper notes. It's good way to explore the hospital. In the first few weeks you will also have to attend multiple workshops and sessions like Trust Induction, IT Training, Skills training, training for medical devices like ABGs, glucose monitoring, oxygen devices. Make sure that you do not miss them jot them in your mobile calendar to alert you. Remember you must inform your consultant, colleagues before hand if you have leave for such trainings. It's extremely unprofessional to inform them at tie last minute or disappear without letting any one know. After a few days you will be switched to shadow a junior doctor. This is your chance to extract as much information as possible from them since they run the ward and they know how to deal with ward based issues. So learn from them how to Clark patients, draw/requests bloods, order investigations, prescribe medications, do discharge letters, refer patients to different specialties, how the filing system works, how to write notes in patients files.
You can ask them what's the daily schedule like, the teaching days, protected time off, tips and tricks on how to deal with staff and consultants. Try to get as much as you can because in a week or two you will be all alone and managing your patients. Of course you can ask for help anytime but definitely the responsibility will increase. Remember that things are quite different here give some time to understand them and try not to cut corners. And in no time you will be working like a pro. Do not hesitate to work at a junior level, it's part of your career progression to learn from everybody around you. Although you will be shadowing for a month but you will be paid your monthly scholarship amount as promised by the College.
